I chose this staple simpleton from my pantry for this weekly photo challenge: Layers
These onions look so approachable in this basket.
Wait until you pick and cut them…… and you can see the layers unfold, that is if you can see them with your teary eyes.
For some recipes, especially home made salsa, guacamole and the Indian bhel puri, I prefer to chop onions by hand. It provides a different texture and crunch versus using the electrical food chopper. The one downside is the tears.
A few years ago, I discovered a trick. I turn on the range hood exhaust fan. Next, I chop the onions on the counter closest to the range hood. Voilà! No more tears!
Could you share your tricks to prevent tears when you chop onions?
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend!
Onions are masters of layers! I read a while ago that you should place your onions in ice water for 30 min before you chop them. I’ve never tried it because I don’t think about it ahead of time, so I just cry and cry…
I like the idea of placing the onions in ice water. It is very doable and I have to try it out. Thanks for sharing this tip.
We can say onions are Master of Layers and Master of tears!
love your description of the onions I can only eat the sweet ones, they’re easier on the digestive system
Thank you Linda! I like the onion rings made with the sweet Vidalia onions.:)
